The Details
opening

Fun

Ansel Adams at 100, from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Beautiful photographs, and a nice use of Flash in the web interface. (High bandwidth recommended).

Book Chapters

Read the reflections on chapter one by your classmates. Then post about chapter two. Post at least 100 words in the "Chapter 2" discussion forum, completing these lines:

  • "Student-centered instruction sounds great, but..."
  • "Here's what I think about open-ended learning environments: "
  • "Sometimes learning is a social experience, and sometimes it is not. For instance..."

Finally, read chapter three.

Library Resources

It is important that you understand how to search and use the library, even from a distance. You may need to access the library resources for this course. UM has been very diligent in making library resources available to online students.

Journals in Instructional Design and Technology

Here is a link to my list of the best journals (scholarly periodicals) in instructional design and technology (IDT). Most of these are not available online. There are online journals out there, but at this point most of the best journals are not online yet. There are exceptions.

These are the journals in which you will find peer-reviewed scholarly articles. Most of these journals are in our and any reasonably well-stocked university library.

When a journal is described as refereed or peer-reviewed, this means when a journal editor receives a manuscript, the editor sends that manuscript out to three or four experts in the field who review the manuscript to determine if it is worth being published.

Here is another list--an export from my database of journals.

Continue Inspiration

Continue using the resources from week 2 to learn and practice with Inspiration or your chosen concept mapping software.

Complete concept map assignment

and submit it via WebCT. Go to "Assignments", go to the "Concept Map Lesson Plan and Sample" assignment, and submit your completed assignment.

Resources

Instructional Technology Connections, a massive site, well-organized and regularly maintained by Martin Ryder at the University of Colorado at Denver, is a treasure-trove of information about instructional design and technology (IDT).

Atomic Learning is a company that produces tutorials for various software applications. Some are free and some require a paid subscription to view. This company has carved out a good niche providing visual help to customers learning to use software applications.

Know Me
get to know me

Kim and I spend a lot of time at home these days. We live in Germantown, about 20 minutes from campus. We have two little girls, Lauren (30 months) and Grace (15 months). So, life has changed quite a bit in the last two years. Grace was born just after we moved to Memphis from North Carolina. Both girls had risky and complicated deliveries, but both are in good health now, thank the Lord.

Kim and I have been married almost seven years, and she's simply a wonderful person.
