FunSee what I've tagged as "fun" in my collection of bookmarks. Visit one or two of the sites. Read Chapter 14on the role of assessment. Social SoftwareRead the critiques written by your classmates last week. Post at least two significant comments in response in the same forum. Your comments must be more than "I agree with what you are saying". Review of social bookmarkingFurl and del.cio.us are two new sites that help you store and share web links, and metadata about those links. These are "social bookmarking" sites. They allow you to save your web bookmarks to a web page, and also see who else is bookmarking a particular site. This is a great way to save and share web links. You also create your own "tags" to mark the sites in a way that is memorable to you. It then becomes easy to search and share those sites. For instance, here are all the sites I have saved recently about "online teaching" and here are my saved links about wikis (collaborative software). Social bookmarking is a little hard to explain, but worth trying. Reading listFirst, read my short commentary on social bookmarking. Next, read Seven Things You Should Know About Social Bookmarking. Read this abstract, and read the article, marked as a PDF, and linked near the end. Now, it is important that you understand how tagging works as a means for archiving, finding, and identifying resources. Read The Hive Mind: Folksonomies and User-Based Tagging, by Ellyssa Kroski. And, read Social Bookmarking Tools by Tony Hammond, et. al. Finally, watch this screencast tutorial on how to use Delicious. Optional: Create a Delicious AccountGo to Delicious and click "getting started". Write about Social BookmarkingWrite a critique (300 word minimum) on either "The Hive Mind" or "Social Bookmarking Tools". Include a description of how you might use social bookmarking in your studies, and also how you might use social bookmarking in your teaching or professional work. Post it in the discussion forum "social bookmarking". LinksHere's a Center for Instructional Design from Brigham Young University. Spend a few minutes examining what services this center provides, and what areas of expertise are represented by the center's staff. Note the links and tutorials. Here's another Center serving the faculty of Seattle University. Similarities? |

No real news for me this week. We're all doing fine. My sister left for China today. We're planning a trip to Texas over Christmas. We're spending Thanksgiving at home, and inviting some friends over. I'm leading a home group with our church, and we've met three times. We had two advising sessions for IDT students this week, and had about 12 students attend. We're planning a special speaker on Nov. 28th, and I encourage you to attend if you are interested in IDT. If you'd like to know what's going on in IDT, on our site, sign up for the newsletter. |
