Hello Memphis E-learning Network subscribers, I'm changing our mailing list (and website) to make managing our meetings and announcements more simple and effective. The new site is: <a href="http://elearnmemphis.wordpress.com/">http://elearnmemphis.wordpress.com/</a> We will automatically change your subscription from the old mailing list to the new. You will receive an email from Wordpress.com asking to confirm this change. If you prefer, you can go ahead and subscribe to the site at the above URL using your preferred email address. Note that this is not a "discussion" mailing list--just an occasional announcement about the E-learning Network. If you don't want to receive these announcements you are welcome to not subscribe or decline the forthcoming invitation to the new site. If you know others who are in the learning and development business, please direct them to our new site. The E-Learning Network: Meetings on hold to adjust meeting times

We have temporarily put E-learning Network meetings on hold. In response to feedback we are considering moving the regular meeting time to late afternoons so participants can attend the meetings and then go home rather than back to work. We have been meeting during lunch for the last two years, and it may be time for a change. There is no real standard … and there shouldn't be. Storyboarding is, and should remain, flexible and fluid depending on the project. The problem is how to use and implement the tools, templates, and methods to get the best results out of your storyboarding efforts. Participants should come prepared to share one or two (or more) resources so we can build a useful compendium for all of us to use in our individual practices. Resources can include instructional design Web sites, blogs, job aids, samples, templates, or anything else you consider an excellent resource that your instructional design colleagues might find valuable. Together we’ll develop a comprehensive repository of resources for instructional designers … and we’ll continue to build and publish new resources over the next year. Bio Sketch Dr. Joe Thomas is an innovator and entrepreneur. For more than 20 years, Joe has created and evaluated technology-based learning solutions for education and workplace training. Collaborating with professionals and experts across many different disciplines, he has developed industry-leading strategies for transferring learning and knowledge, and then assessing the impact of learning on the individual and the organization. Joe is a former member of senior management at NIKE, Inc. where he worked domestically and internationally (Japan, Korea, Belgium) to implement Change Management and training solutions for new distribution centers being built in Asia and Europe. He managed a multi-cultural team in the areas of organizational development, applications training, and executive leadership development. After successfully developing and leading the delivery of complex training solutions across diverse national groups and languages, Joe was invited to return to the NIKE World Headquarters-based Promotional Distribution Center as the operations manager to turn around the ailing business. Prior to joining NIKE, Joe served as a senior industrial psychologist with Federal Express Corporation where he was responsible for measuring employee competencies for all customer service-based jobs. He also provided consultation to the Leadership Institute, The Quality Academy, the Ground Operations Division, the Customer Service Division and the International Customer Service Division in assessment methodologies, statistics and data analysis, training impact measurement, and program evaluation. Joe earned a B.A. and M.A. in experimental psychology from California State University Fullerton, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in quantitative psychology from the Johns Hopkins University. Because of his passion for teaching, Joe has maintained a number of adjunct teaching positions during his professional career with institutions like the Johns Hopkins University (statistics, psychology), Cal State Fullerton (research and design), Towson State University (testing and measurement), and the Christian Brothers University (industrial-organizational psychology). Joe maintains membership in many professional organizations such as the American Psychological Association, the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, the American Statistical Association, the American Educational Research Association, and the National Council on Measurement in Education, to name a few. We'll have some light refreshments. </li><li>About the E-Learning Network: <a href="http://eln.teachable.org/about">http://eln.teachable.org/about</a> </li></ul> Moving from Linear to Non-Linear E-Learning Environments – Two Case Examples from the Cure4Kids Global Learning Network Yuri Quintana, Ph.D. Abstract This presentation will give an overview of the Cure4Kids Global Learning Network, and summarize key interactive design challenges. The purpose of the Cure4Kids program (<a href="http://www.Cure4Kids.org/">www.Cure4Kids.org</a>) is to deliver education worldwide to health professionals and children focused on childhood catastrophic diseases such as cancer. As of January 2011, Cure4Kids has provided free educational content to more than 25,000 doctors, nurses, and other health care professionals in 175 countries. Cure4Kids has over 1,600 online seminars and conferences with audio narration, electronic text books and journals, and self-paced online courses. Selected materials are offered in several languages. The site contains presentations from 44 international conferences. Since 2002, site members have downloaded more than 4 million items. Over 250 international groups meet online for collaborative learning and collaborations. Future work will involve non-linear pathways for interactive online medical cases. The Cure4Kids team has also developed the St. Jude Cancer Education for Children (Cure4Kids for Kids) program that helps school children, parents, and teachers understand the basic science and treatment of cancer. The program focuses on three main objectives: 1) addressing common misconceptions about childhood cancer, 2) instilling healthy habits in children that can help reduce the risk of developing cancer as an adult, and 3) increasing children’s overall interest in science and scientific careers. A multidisciplinary team developed the age-appropriate educational materials in collaboration with national experts. The new Cure4Kids for Kids website (<a href="http://www.Cure4Kids.org/Kids)">www.Cure4Kids.org/Kids)</a> makes the St. Jude Cancer Education for Children Program available to children across the country and the world. Cartoon characters serve as tour guides throughout the narrated books, interactive games, glossary, and question and answer sections of the site. Future plans include adapting the content to different levels of learning abilities, other cultures, and international deployments. The talk will emphasize the need to move from linear learning pathways to non-linear learning environments with tailored messages. Bio Sketch At St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Yuri Quintana, Ph.D. is the Director for Education and Informatics in the International Outreach Program. Dr. Quintana has led the development of Cure4Kids (<a href="http://www.Cure4Kids.org/">www.Cure4Kids.org</a>) an online pediatric cancer education and collaboration Web site used by thousands of health professionals worldwide; Cure4Kids for Kids, a community outreach education program to educate children and communities about cancer and healthy living; and Pond4Kids, an online system used for international pediatric cancer protocol research. Prior to coming to St. Jude, Quintana was a principal investigator in the Canadian HealNet Research Network focusing on consumer health informatics; while there, he designed online cancer decision support systems for the Canadian Cancer Society. Formerly a faculty member at the University of Western Ontario, Quintana also served as director of the New Media Research Lab developing innovations in interactive media and online education. He has held high-tech positions at IBM Canada Limited, Watcom, and academic appointment at the University of Waterloo and the University of Victoria. He has been the chair of four international conferences on medical informatics. Quintana earned master’s and doctoral degrees in systems design engineering and an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering and computer science, all from the University of Waterloo. He is the Chair of the IEEE Memphis Computer Society, Senior Member of ACM, and a member of AMIA, AACE, and ASIS&T. Quintana is currently focused on developing innovative technologies that empower communities of health care professionals and consumers to learn, communicate and collaborate on a worldwide basis.
