I'm Trey Martindale, a professor in instructional design and technology. I help people and organizations achieve their learning goals. I spend my work time doing four things:
- Conducting research about how people learn and perform in education, heath care, business, and the military.
- Teaching interesting, intelligent, and motivated graduate students.
- Helping organizations improve their training and learning infrastructure and processes.
- Serving the university, the community, and the field of instructional design and technology.

To see current happenings, please visit my news site. There I post news, links, tools, and ideas about online teaching and learning.
I'm on the faculty of the University of Memphis, with the talented scholars in the Instructional Design and Technology graduate program. For the last few years I have been teaching graduate students about instructional design, course authoring, instructional strategies, and other topics. I'm also the Associate Director of the Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Workforce Co-Lab. At the Co-Lab we work to help improve the learning environment in businesses and other organizations.
Previously I served on the faculty of East Carolina University, the University of West Florida, and Texas Tech University. Prior to this I was an instructor for Texas A&M University, and later a patient educator and specialist with cardiac and pulmonary patients at the University of Texas Health Center in Tyler, TX.
My research focus is in the area of online learning--specifically examining emerging technologies and methods to enable self-directed, informal learning, and the generation of online social learning spaces. Here are my recent publications and presentations.
I look forward to interacting with you and helping you reach your learning goals.
