trey martindale

I'm Trey Martindale and I'm a professor in instructional design and technology. I enjoy teaching, writing, interacting, and helping people and organizations achieve their learning goals.

I spend my work time doing three things:

  1. Teaching interesting, intelligent, and motivated graduate students.
  2. Researching and writing and about how people learn and perform in education, heath care, business, and the military.
  3. Serving the university, the community, and the field of instructional design and technology.

To see what's currently happening, please visit my news and conversation site. There I post news, links, tools, and ideas about online teaching and learning.

In Fall 2005 I began a new faculty post at the University of Memphis, with the talented people in Instructional Design and Technology. Previously I served on the faculty at East Carolina University, and the University of West Florida. For the last few years I have been teaching graduate courses in instructional design, multimedia authoring, instructional video, and other topics.

Prior to this I was an instructor in the Instructional Technology program at Texas Tech University. At Tech I was an instructional designer for three years, developing instructional software and video for teachers of visually impaired students. Prior to this I was an instructor for Texas A&M University in the Kinesiology program, and later a patient educator and specialist with cardiac and pulmonary patients at the University of Texas Health Center in Tyler, TX. In 1994 I was a teacher and church administrator for a year in Belize, Central America. I'm a certified secondary education teacher in biology.

My research focus is in the area of online learning--specifically examining emerging technologies and methods to enable self-directed learning, and the generation of community. Recently I have been analyzing online resources that have been recognized as exemplary to help teachers and learners sort through the thousands of educational resources, and to use them for effective learning.

I look forward to interacting with you and helping you reach your learning goals.
