Agenda

  1. scribes
  2. review week 3
  3. review timeline assignments
  4. discuss project 2: research synthesis- Length (400-450 word count) in the narrative. Make it fit one page. Single space. Do references in APA. You have to bring three articles together. Needs to be research, scholarly articles (does not have to include experiments). For topic ideas click on microphone and look at the list of terms. Preferably the article should be within the last 6 years, but if you have a really good article that is older it is acceptable. The general spirit of the assignment is to address current research. Check out Martindale’s top journals.
  5. Definitions
  6. Clark/Kozma debate

  7. Chapter 5
  8. Chapter 6

Assignments

  1. Clear up wiki notes. Edit weekly notes 1, 2, 3. Could be formatting, clarifying, “wiki gardening”. It has to be at least 3, one edit per week. You can put your name next to your change. You may also want to fill in your name at the bottom of the page so it will be shown in the history. May edit the definition page instead of one of the week pages.
  2. Project 2: research synthesis
  3. Read Kirschner ("Why minimal guidance during instruction does not work"), Sweller, and Clark article.
  4. Read the two links about "The Media Debate".

Back at week two

there was an assignment to check out the Advance Learning Center of the University of Memphis. At this site there is a good presentation which introduces iSpring(FREE). This is a program which can take your PowerPoint presentations and convert them into flash files. This allows you to put them on a website. The file size is smaller and it plays well. It also takes audio, slide transitions, animations, just about anything you have used in your 2003 or 2007 powerpoint. The files can be uploaded to umdrive or whatever server you are using. It can also be uploaded to slideboom, a server used by iSpring. Check this out by choosing presentations on the right column at the Advance Learning Center. Patty

IDT GSA Announcements

IDT GSA meeting next Thursday, will be on the list serve. Probably will be at “On the Boarder” in celebration of AECT project submissions and discussing where the IDT GSA will be going and possible fund raising opportunities. More will be announced next week.
Go to AECT if you would like to submit a proposal for the upcoming conference- especially if you are a doctoral student.

Class

We took time to look at everyone's timeline and took notes. Discussion

We looked at notes from week 3.

What are the roots of our field?

  • Many of the founders of the field were in psychology
    • However, many IDT specialists do not consider themselves psychologists.
  • Are we instructional designers, instructional technologists, instructional scientists?
  • Does Instructional Science study Instructional Design?
    • Instructional Science studies Instruction.
  • What is the difference between and instructional designer and an instructional technologist?
    • Differentiation:
      • Instructional Scientist: Studies Instruction.
      • Instructional Designer: Designs Instruction.
      • Instructional Technologist: deals with Technology for Instruction.
    • Instructional technology is most frequently used (at least in most education) is about hardware and software. However, Techology, the word, implies the application of knowledge, skills, to a technical process.
  • Lloyd Rieber from the University of Georgia- "I’m an instructional technologist”

Talk about our definitions

  • What is psychology- mental processes by an individual
  • What is Science- studying everything around us in a “scientific way”- you have to verify it and prove it. This involves an hypothesis, based on observations, run tests, collect data, and analyze that data.
  • What is an instructional science? Do we practice instructional science? What is the difference between and instructional design, instructional science, and learning science?

Educational Technology

  • “Educational Technology” is a very prominent journal in our field.
    • Not about hardware and software, will find conceptual models.
    • Technology has started to mean hardware and software.
    • It used to mean the process of creating something to help others learn something.
    • Words change their meanings over time.

What did we find interesting or surprising on our definitions?

  • Good analogy using swans about observation, hypothesis, test, publication, verification, and theory.

General Suggestions

  • Instructional Technology Connections- Martin Ryder, is a useful link
  • Add books and resources to bottom of home page.
  • Add IT connections page. Add some content so we know what it is about.
  • Check out Dr. Martindale's delicious page for new links in IDT.
    • Enter idt7052 tag
    • Check out Nada Dabagh
    • Check out Gus Prestera
  • When adding to the wiki think long term.
  • Add link on our wiki for interesting software.
  • Our Wiki
    • Our wiki is still being formed. Right now, we are more focused on the here and now, but towards the end of the class, we may want to create summarizes of our content. May need to collaboratively decide what information we may want to access in the future.
  • To use pictures from flickr, go here

Timelines:

  • Many people used Powerpoint
    • PowerPoint Pros
      • It was well suited for the project
      • More control of where you want to place information, dates, and pictures.
      • Easy to follow with lines and boxes and color coded
      • Free shapes drawing
      • Some were very academic and some were more visually appealing
      • Use of Microsoft SmartArt
    • Timeline software (xtimeline), flash, and a wiki were also used
      • User friendly
      • Liked the lay-out
      • Overall thumbs up
    • Beedocs is timeline software for Macs.
    • Smartdraw- has watermark, 30-day free trial.
      • More of a graphing program, but could be used for timelines
    • Microsoft Project has a project template that could be used for a timeline.

Chapter 5

  • What is constructivism?- it is not a theory it is an epistemology theory of beliefs. It is a philosophy.

Jonassen is cited frequently in ID. He talks about a paradigm shift.

  • Is constructivism a method? It is not an instructional methodology and not a theory of learning. It is a set of beliefs.
  • What is an epistemology? – the study of or the nature of knowing.
  • Cannot compare Behaviorism, cognitivism, and constructivism. It is a category error.
  • Constructivism should actually be called constructionism, (but it does have another meaning in theories and models).
  • Learning sciences
    • Activity or practice based
    • Some see it as a new field others do not
    • People should engage with the content
    • Teachers are guides
  • “Just turned learning upside down on its head”
  • Constructivism has its own journal, conference, graduate programs, money, etc…
  • Stages- part of an instructional process
  • A sense of elitism among some in the learning sciences

Chapter 6

  • Check out table 6.1 on pg. 54 on epistemology differences
  • Whatever epistemology- must use grounded design.
  • Do we need to defend the theory that we use?
  • We just need to defend our instructional decision.
  • Different people and different material needs to be taught differently
