Notes from the beginning of class
- wiki: a software that results in a website. You can edit pages in a Browser.
There are open source wikis and closed source wikis
- open source
- the code is available to whoever wants it.
Pmwiki
Two Types of Software
- client software: this type of software can run on your personal computer
- server software: this type of software is meant to run on a server and to be hosted
Reasons why it is nice to have a server software
- It is nice to have your own domain in case you move
- It creates permanence
- It is reliable
- It enables you to present yourself professionally
- You can be in control of your digital identity
IPAD
- It is a nice tool for kids to have
- Nice for meetings to eliminate rudeness
- Can see great advantages in some professions such as doctors, inventory, etc.
Spam
- On Wiki, the attachments are turned off so you cannot post documents or images
- To get rid of SPAM, you can click on history... it will say " this line has changed from context to...and then have a lot of other lines
- Click restore to get rid of it
- recent changes will be at the top
- If you want a page to go away, type in delete on that page
Wikis
- You can edit pages in Browser
- You can be completely open
- You can set the wiki so that only some people can edit it
- Not meant to be in chronological order
Blogs
- Time set up entries
- Have to have a user account
- Set up to a headline and body
- Meant to be in chronological order
