Unit Plan Discussion
Anne - Solar system exploration and other homes for the human race - subject was appropriate for 3rd grade, but the data available was complicated.
Julie - Slope intercept formula, variables, and graphing - math internet sites allowed for the students to conduct their own research. Forms provided the students the means to document what they found on the internet. They then had to develop a Power Point to teach their peers.
Tasha - Unit plan was about making a college choice. Variables included population of the town/city, location, enrollment, etc. Students were prompted to search for data on these and other variables. The students created a paper and power point summarizing what they found.
Brian - Early childhood/mental retardation - difficult audience to design a lesson plan for. So, instead, Brian selected a subject concerning disease & disease prevention for an 8th grade audience. For the student project, they were to explore HIV/AIDS and communicable diseases. Brian cautioned us to be careful when searching for sensitive information. Some information on the internet is inappropriate for young students. Filters should be used. Others suggest that caution is the key. Even unsuspected sites could be inappropriate.
Jackie - unit plan focused on pre school. The plan explored the use of primitive methods of accounting, e.g. stones, pebbles, etc. Students were asked to find symbols from the Romans.
Derrick - unit plan focused on secondary, specifically Algebra II and Trig. Students were asked to graph equations. Links for the sites are embedded in the documents.
April - unit plan focused on the 5th grades. Groups were formed to explore different cultures. Students compared cultures that were researched with their own cultures. Used Excel, power point. Three versions of Cinderella were read and compared.
April - Spanish lesson about recipes. They found recipes and were asked to describe the recipes to others in the class
Magdulun - Unit plan involved taking a virtual tour of a significant city. They were to gather images, photos that represented the city and present them in power point.
John - Unit plan involved football/physical education. The plan led students to the internet to find images of how to catch and throw the football.
Asa - Unit plan involved planning a 4 day "getaway" weekend. The students had to plan the whole trip to 4 different cities. They had to describe the itinerary, budget, attractions in a power point.
Momadu - Unit plan involved logarithmic functions, algebra. They were to find practice problems in the web with solutions. The students were to show this in power point.
Julie suggested the site:
www.purplemath.com
for a good math resource.
Dr. Martindale described the advantage and disadvantage and need of the internet, LOTS OF INFORMATION, LOTS OF INFORMATION and need for 1000 librarians to help sort through it all.
Heather - unit plan involved southern culture. Students were to find certain southern cultural evidence in Collierville. Students were judged by the creativity and effort to locate and incorporate cultural evidence in the presentation. Intent was to expand the students perspective.
CJ - Second grade science lesson plan. Animal structural traits were investigated. A think sheet was used to prompt students to find a bird that can't fly, an animal that doesn't have legs but still gets around, etc. The students would describe the 6-7 animals in their particular slide show. One animal sees better at night and many traits exist in the animal kingdom.
Bill - Scientific method - gathering data and testing - Alegbra II focus - population growth for the state of TN. - used kid freindly data from the Cenus B. - incorporated journal articles
