AssignmentsChapter Notes/Information8:15 - students are working to load assignments on UM Drive in public folder. We are asked to look at next assignment. Today is a lovely day, and we spent the first few minutes of class uploading our assignments. We are hopeful that they are excellent! Much thanks to Julie for her help! A storyboard is a visual representation of what your report will look like. Class activitiesafter uploading we worked in groups and presented lesson plans and maps. We then nominated a lesson plan and a map from the group to present to the entire class. I really like this class. It keeps me on my toes. Not boring at all : ) Examples of concept maps from a prior experience
concept maps helps one to see how others think Tarsha- programming flow chart lets you see the consequence or possibility of a choice Group Discussion - Chapter 3What is instructional design? What's the difference between a "teacher" and a "trainer?" What makes a good teacher?
Instruction - can I teach someone to be a great instructor? You can be better than you already are, but you may or may not ever be "great."
Can I learn to be a good/effective instructor? Is instruction an art or a science? the class began to consider instruction was more of a science than an art. Whereas, teaching tended to be more an art than a science. Teachers are instructors, but instructors aren't necessarily teachers. What is the John Voigt movie where Voigt teaches the children off of the coast of the Carolinas? More emotional attachments to the idea of teacher than instructor. Learning Styles VAKT (Visual, auditory, kinesthetic, tactile) Special education and exceptional learners Empirical research that identifies learning styles is a little suspect, because no focused effort to isolate these styles. There are almost 25 different learning styles reported in literature. Distinct styles are difficult to isolate. Secondly, what is known has, in some cases, been misapplied. Labels have been assigned to the learner and has "cubby" holed the student. This biases the student's perception of themselves and other's perception of the student. Researchers in ID (Instructional Design) question learning styles. ID researchers believe we should look at instructional principles / structure and not learning styles. Be careful when you consider using the idea of learning styles and learning styles inventories. ID'ers look at the environment, context (where are the learners coming from), what do they already know, etc. On page 48, behavioral and cognitive objectives are discussed, e.g. the "learner will plot the data on a graph." The behavioral objective includes the given, the active verb, the measures, etc. The cognitive objective is written differently. Some learning is not as measurable (cognition) as others (behavior). How do we learn? How does the brain work? WE DON'T KNOW. We have theories, behavioral and cognitive. Objectives need to match the theory, e.g. multiplication tables - repetition (cognitive), learn how the US House of Rep's works - different way to learn. Instructional strategy - What is it?
Assignment #2 - Find some resource about instructional strategies (IS). Assignment #1 for Thurs- Bring an example (printed handout) from Internet, a book, an example of a concept map something that an organization is trying to do |
