Meeting 1

To Do List:

  • Read chapters 1 and 2 in the book. Also, read through the class schedule on-line, become familiar with assignments and their due dates.
  • Go to umdrive website and complete the tutorial on How to Addess is listed later in these notes. Goes to Dr. Martindale's folder and look in the stuff folder and view the Stuff Everyone Should Have. The web address was posted on the Wiki site.
  • Concept Map: Experiment with Inspiration and get to know it, play with it. Kidspiration is a similar program for young children that is also okay for you to experiment with. Bring something to class that you made, your family tree for example. Can download the program from Inspiration.com. Bring your "creation" to class on your flashdrive.

Introductions

  1. Lindsey: pre-k teacher, uses smartboards in class. Has done a podcast with class in Dallas. Recently engaged, wedding next summer. Is currently an ICL grad student.
  2. Brenda: special ed teacher with MCS, wants to use more technology in her classes. Is a grad student in ICL.
  3. Melanie: teaches at Lausanne, pre-K and 1st grade. Is a grad student in ICL. Uses powerpoint for some of her lessons. Laptop Institute - in 5th year. Is a grad student in ICL.
  4. Jamie: will be teaching high school government & history in MCS. Was previously an editor with McGraw-Hill.
  5. David: Is a doctoral student. Currently working on the Memphis Content Lieracy Academy under Dr. Robert Cooter, Jr. Discussed the goals and objectives of MCLA and gave a quick overview.
  6. Sally: starting the MAT program, has been teaching in a Montessori program. Trained in Italy for a year, has been teaching an age 6-9 classroom for the last 3 years. Is very glad to be in this class.
  7. Shariee: majoring in Consumer Education in Fashion Merchandising. Is an entertainment event promoter and is launching a women's fashion magazine.
  8. Melody: I hope this counts for my Wiki gardening. Since I didn't make it to our first class, I am adding my profile to this page. I have taught middle art for seven years at a private school in East Memphis. I am finishing up my course requirements in grad school at UM during this first summer session. Taking 3 graduate level classes in a shortened summer period.

""NTeQ model:"" a lesson plan design. Helps to document the use of technology in the classroom. Allows for easy documentation of what you and your students do.

Dr. Martindale discussed the grading policy. An A is excellent work, B is good, C means you got it done on time.

""Attendance:"" Must be in class! Missing a class will cost you 6 points off your final grade. Participation is part of your grade. There are no incompletes.

""Writing:"" Must be perfect. Use a proof reader.

""Plagiarism:"" Read the posted policy. Will fail the course for plagiarism.

Dr. Martindale discussed the www storage folder that will store web pages that you've created. The public folder holds items that are available to everyone.

""First Assignment:"" Concept Maps: is like a mind map, a way to visually demonstrate a specific concept. Example: the TV show Lost. Jack is the main character who is connected to multiple other characters. Jack is in the middle of the map and is connected by lines to the other characters.

The textbook has a section on concept maps and describes how they are used. Inspiration is software that will create concept maps. Dr. Martindale encourages us to use Inspiration to make our concept maps. Before the next class, experiment with Inspiration.
