Word Processing

  1. Workplace Skills: Workplace skills: Arguably on of the most important benefits, students will learn basic word processing functions that are crucial to getting a job this day in age.
  2. Individualization of work: Students can use different fonts, sizes, colors and formating to make their work stand out.
  3. Equity of Work: All of the students work is in the same format, not half typed or half written. This makes it easier for the teacher to grade and for other students to read if using peer review.
  4. Reference Tools: Students have a spell check at their fingertips, along with grammar checks and a thesaurus. This can quickly help a student elaborate on his/her assignment and ultimately form better documents.

Spreadsheets

  1. Organizational Skills: To make sure all formulas are correct, the students will have to make sure their spreadsheets are organized and correct.
  2. Math Concepts: Students can use spreadsheets functions to complete complex mathematical problems, such as averages for a large number of items.
  3. Graph/Charts: Students can use a spreadsheet to make a graph or chart of data collected during a lesson. For example, students could graph the monthly average high temperature in their town.

  • Dr. Martindale showed us his personal to-do list, using the wiki. He used a format from pmwiki to design his personal wiki page.
  • Google spreadsheet - Go to google and click on more. Go to documents. You may have to sign up for a new account. It's free.

  1. Blogging is personal publishing. It is an on-line journal of sorts. Blogs can be public or private.
  • We set up an account at http://facebook.com.
  • We set up an account at http://myspace.com.
  • Dr. Martindale put a link to UsingRSS on our class page. Here we find in question/answer format several links to articles and videos. We need to explore this and be prepared to answer questions about this information for our quiz on Tuesday. Required: Watch the two videos and read the three articles at the bottom of the page under Extra Resources.
