Today's notes

It's gonna be a big day! :)

We started off with a Steve Jobs conference video.

To learn more about Quicktime look here

We looked at Dr. Martindale's Presentations Wiki. You can revisit it by navigating through the Website Menu on the top right of the Wiki.

Keynote: Similar to powerpoint. Bullet points should be under YOUR notes. The less important the visuals are going to be, the more important the exact words that you say are.

NetNewsWire: Client Based Aggregator. (little more fully featured, can read offline) Bloglines: Web Based Aggregator (available whereever web connection exists.)

We thought about and made notes on how many databases of which we are a part.

Speech notes:

  • Remember: you cannot create a presentation. You can create visuals to go along with it, but they are not the presentation.
  • Powerpoint has the potential to lead you towards a "snoozer" type presentation.
  • Potential problems: LIGHTING! Low light for projector, but need more light for presenter.
  • Many potential problems. Getting a remote can give you so much more mobility, making a presentation much less awkward.
  • You don't want your back to the audience.
  • Writing text can be a recap, but not for initial presentation. If your point is "our sales are up 35%," your slide says "35%" only.
  • "Click to add notes" feature: What the presenter really should be reading from. Under the Slide Show menu, click on View Presenter Tools
  • Might need VGA cable.
  • Always check out the room you will be presenting in before your presentation.
  • Take with you a printed version of your notes. Just in case something goes wrong!
  • WRITE YOUR SCRIPT FIRST if that is the most important part.

TIP Website

Presentation Zen

  • Unconference -people show up for a conference, but there is no rigid setup. Very self-organized.

See website: http://www.digital-web.com/articles/understanding_the_unconference/

Speech Assignment:

  • For this assignment--YOU are the show.
  • Will turn in a set of visuals and your own words...every bit of it, welcome, jokes, and all...into a separate document.
  • your slides should be virtually USELESS without you.
  • Write your script first!!
  • The main assignment can be found on Dr. Martindale's UMdrive.

To do by next class

Vonage Voice Over IP (VoIP) Is a way to use the internet for your phone service. The rates are usually much less than land line phones with added benefits of voicemail in your email, free calls to Europe, Cananda, U.S., and having more than one number ring into your phone. There are several companies that offer VoIP, including Vonage and Comcast.
