Prospecting for Martindale templates and stylesheets relevant to IDT7090
Prospecting web pages helps identify properties of various object categories in the site and can help generate ideas for your own pages. As Dr. Martindale mentioned in class, we can find examples all over the web.... and here are some right in our own backyard. --Enjoy
DWT files are templates. You can browse/view them in IE to see what the template shell “looks like.” To view the template's code in a text editor, look for something like Page/ViewSource in your browser. The template file is where the stylesheet (CSS) is identified. CSS files are actually text files. Browsing brings them up immediately in a text editor. When viewing either a dwt or css file in a text editor, you can print and save, so you can study the code offline to learn the behind-the-scenes secrets of course web pages.

Flowcharts

flowchart tutorial from maricopa.edu

  • Microsoft Visio
    • Part of Office Professional for $149.95
    • Easy to use, when you move boxes, lines/arrows will follow
    • Flowchart Templates included; also gives examples of what different "boxes" mean
    • Most tools are similar to typical Office interface

Smart Draw Single user license $297

Pros:

  • Easy to use
  • 30 day trial
  • Built in templates
  • Easy conversion into multiple formats
  • Easy Download

Cons:

  • Water mark left on document
  • Lines do not move with objects
  • Somewhat expensive
Inspiration
  • Pros:
    • Free 30-day trial available (http://inspiration.com/freetrial/index.cfm)
    • Inexpensive ($69)
    • Great for brainstorming (initial site planning)
    • Links easy to connect to variety of hot spots on icon
    • Link lines can be solid, dashed, dotted; two-headed arrows possible
    • Linking lines "stick" with the icon when you move it
    • Lasso tool lets you move large chunks/sections at a time
    • Modest but adequate collection of standard flowchart icons, amidst vast ocean of non-flowchart libraries
    • Easy to fill in boxes with text
    • Easy to "write on" connecting lines
    • Educators frequently already familiar with tool
    • On-line community (mostly educators); online quickstart tutorial (http://inspiration.com/tutorials/)
  • Cons:
    • Showing connections to more than one point in flowchart makes outline feature less viable
    • Need to be creative to control location of right angles in linking lines
    • Difficult to control (impossible?) page breaks when outputting to printer; carries over to exporting to gif. (However: can create multi-page interlinking charts (technique not readily apparent)
    • Text in complex flowcharts exported to gifs can be miniscule
  • Pro?Con?
    • Interface may be more intuitive for the Mac user than the Windows user.
    • For downward compatibility, take care to Save as earlier version of software.
