What was discussed?

Action scripts

ActionScript is a scripting language based on ECMAScript, used primarily for the development of websites and software using the Adobe Flash Player platform (in the form of SWF files embedded into Web pages). Originally developed by Macromedia, the language is now owned by Adobe (which acquired Macromedia in 2005) and continues its development. ActionScript was initially designed for controlling simple 2D vector animations made in Adobe Flash (formerly Macromedia Flash). Later versions added functionality allowing for the creation of Web-based games and rich Internet applications with streaming media (such as video and audio).

Storyboards

We need to generate two types of storyboards for our next assignment 1. Working storyboard- these are not typically shown to the client and therefore, do not have to be as detailed. These primarily will serve as notes for y our design. 2. Client storyboard-these storyboards will detailed and descriptive. The client will review them and grant approval before you proceed to the next phase of your design. For this class we need 3 client storyboards. Note: Remember you are not Rembrandt or Picasso. Our sketches will not be displayed in any art shows.

When your working on your storyboards, think about the clip that we watched in class from “Nothing In Common.”

Authoring tools are pieces of software that bridges the gap between Instructional designers and SMEs. They are used to create products without using a programmer.

PowerPoint as an Authoring tool

Why is PowerPoint #1 for Web based content?

  • People are familiar with using it
  • Quick and Easy to use and convert to web
  • Huge install base of users
  • Built in templates and clip art
  • Easy transfer of knowledge from other apps such as Word and Excel
  • Good container of other media
  • Scale and resolution of screen is automated
  • Action buttons

What’s wrong with it?

  • It’s a page turner
  • Font sizes are often large by default
  • “Can make things blood maddening” (Bates, J. 2007)
  • PowerPoint does not fully integrate the use scripting
  • “Can not store variable data” (Arnold, C. 2007)
  • Limited interactivity
  • Clunky code

Flash is an authoring tool that allows you to create animation without knowing scripting language.
