Class Notes

At the beginning of the class, we opened up with a discussion about spreadsheet activity one and two. Dr. Martindale asked a couple of students to explain their findings and results. By using the spreadsheet, the students were able to compare their nutriention and climate results easily and sum up their totals within a graph. If you could not upload your graph, Dr. Martindale suggested that you could have copy and paste, use writer, upload in geocities, screen capture or save your graph as a jpeg.

Once the students explained their results, Dr. Martindale ellaborated on the different version of excel and how to convert xlsm to xls.

Here are four links that explain xlsm and how to convert xlsm to xls.

Presentation Software

+ Not intended to be speakers notes
+ Do not uses slides as your notes

Why do people read from their slides?

+ Nervous
+ Addicted to technology
+ Lazy
+ Not Prepared
+ Everybody else does it
+ The software encourage you to do it
+ The physical setup of the room

There are exceptions when a speaker can use their slides as notes. One example if an independent screen writer wants to show their movie to an audience for publicity.

We discussed ways you can use presentation software within the classroom. Here is the list below.

+ Each student personalized slides with dog invoices. Daily Journal life changes
+ Band class formations schematic of positions over time.
+ Examples of leaves use eol.org encyclopedia of life to compare species to entry in eol. Create and show results
+ Drama class
+ Flashcards
+ Timeline software
+ Mind mapping of concept mapping
+ Charts showing a live view of data from spreadsheet
+ Art clips (students sharing ideas)
+ Field trips-preperation for a field trip guided tours of landmarks mental maps of a daily activity
+ Ice breakers bring a photo of your summer vacation

Mr. Martindale recommended the class to watch or read the supersize documentary. Here is a clip on youtube: *http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1Lkyb6SU5U

Lesson plan feedback from Dr. M.

The word processing/internet lesson plans were generally very good. Several were excellent, and I'll link to some.

Issues:

  1. we need to spend time on writing instructional objectives. I didn't count off for this but it needs addressing.
  2. some formatting problems. use the template
  3. some didn't follow the NTeQ model
  4. some grammar problems
  5. a couple of APA formatting issues
  6. four lessons did not include a student artifact

Things we published on the web

There are a whole series of these that I published this is just one of them... Local Hikes in Alabama -Robert Schueller

"For the great enemy of truth is very often not the lie- deliberate, contrived and dishonest- but the myth -persistent, persuasive and unrealistic. Too often we hold fast to the clichés of our forebears. We subject all facts to a prefabricated set of interpretations. We enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought."
