MAJOR ASSIGNMENT (DUE OCTOBER 20)

Lesson Plan – Dr. Martindale presented a number of successful lesson plans from previous classes. He suggested that they could be used as templates. They are posted under the content section where they can be found under the subheading "word processing". The lesson plans are available in zip format. The direct link - https://elearn.memphis.edu/content/enforced/364994-20088085275/unit%20plan%20examples.zip

NOTE: These are in a "zip" archive, so when you download them you may need to unzip the archive (usually by double clicking on it).

Your submitted assignment must include:

1. the lesson plan you created

2. any handouts, think-sheets, or other worksheets student need for the lesson

3. a sample "artifact"--what the student would create or produce as a result of completing your lesson plan

Submit your assignment as a file in the dropbox at: https://elearn.memphis.edu/d2l/tools/LMS/quicklink.asp?ou=364994&type=dropbox&rCode=TBRTrainin-160955

Lesson needs to be self-contained: it needs to be able to exist on it’s own. For our lesson plan, Dr. M wants us to include an artifact as if you were a student going through the lesson. I.E. If your lesson plan is an essay on Andy Warhol, you need to produce such a finished product. If you say in your lesson plan that the students are going through a worksheet for example, you need to include this worksheet. The assignment should also include a screenshot of your survey if you include the creation/completion of an online (for example Zoho) survey.

There may be some useful links like Tennessee Curriculum Standards under the homework help section.

General Class Notes

Dr. M showed us some examples of a survey within the sample lesson plan. Dr. M also wants us to include a screenshot of your survey if you include the creation/completion of an online (for example Zoho) survey.

Educause issues reports and writes briefs about tools, specifically technology and education. They write huge reports about using blogs in education, what’s going on with cyber-security. They also have 2-page summaries about various things such as RSS feeds, chat, security, etc. titled “7 Things You Should Know About _____.”

  • Dr. M suggested we could link to it when presenting our topic.

Someone asked whether Zoho allowed collaboration to edit or share in certain circumstances. Dr. M said there may be circumstances where the creator has more control of a file.

Dr. M said that Visio comes bundled with a full version of Microsoft Office, but otherwise is sold exclusively. It is not a free software program.

Dr. M decided to spend an additional 15 minutes or so in dealing with special topics in word processing. Afterward, he said we would move on to spreadsheets.

Before the web got so big, one of the best ways to distribute software was through CD-ROM. Dr. M said that administrators would see software demonstrated and buy lots of copies of educational software. It was a huge business. The volume of software has dropped off since then because the quality has gone down, but it is still high.

Hyperstudio – a piece of software that is a very basic authoring tool. Popular with education because it is inexpensive.

Allows simple ways to create presentations for various topics. Children can use it as well. Hyperstudio’s popularity went way up, and has since gone way down, because Hyperstudio couldn’t be put on the web. It has advantages in that it is cross-platform.

Brent, J.J., Robert and Sally all volunteered to try out the new version of Hyperstudio on their computers at home.

Flash is very expensive, very hard to learn, and not that great at what it does. It is however, the best thing going as far as creating interactive content on the web.

Dr. M’s wife photoshops their photos. A new version of Photoshop came out with CreativeSuite4 (CS4).

Open-Source software – software that is not proprietary; if you are a programmer, you can look behind the curtain and modify it. You cannot sell it, however.

• This is important because programmers are creating open-source software and giving it away. They often do this because it is a part of their profession. If something they can collaborate on will improve their use over a paid-for piece of software, they all reap a net benefit. Essentially, it is something contributed for the common good that can be modified further.

What is fair use? Dr. M wants us to research copyrights as a part of Assignment #3.

Things that need clarification

A question was brought up about NETS and whether there is a subscription involved. A better question might be what is NETS? to answer both questions click [[http://www.iste.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=NETS|here]

There was a brief discussion about web design and even writing your own code. Yes you can use a web authoring tool or you can write your own code. Its buying refrigerated biscuit dough in a tube versus making biscuits from scratch. If you would like to see a very simple sample of how a website really works or how to write code: http://philip.greenspun.com/seia/html

Teachers Corner

During one of my fall break days I decided to observe at Collegiate School of Memphis (Charter School). This is a brand new charter school that just opened up this year. They currently have only the 7th grade, but each year they will be adding one more grade until they reach the 12th. As I was walking the hallways of this school I noticed the students had displayed some of their projects on the walls. They read, "My name is so and so, and I have logical intelligence." "My name is so and so and I have interpersonal intelligence," etc. It was pretty cool to see how the different students viewed themselves in terms of possessing multiple intelligences (Gardner). I think this was a great way to make all students within the school feel that they belonged, that they each had something special and different to offer. I absolutely loved my experience at this school! -Margie Christie
