Emphasized!! Standards as a Framework for Curricular

The ibstpi standards and competencies are being used nationwide to develop and redesign curricular for Instructional Design and Technology degree programs.

Using standards to design graduate curricular is becoming more common due to the belief that the ibstpi standards provide clarity, specificity and validity to degree programs.

  • Syracuse University recently redesigned their degree program in Instructional Design, Development and Evaluation using the ibstpi standards as a framework.
  • Florida State University is in the process of redesigning its Instructional Systems master’s program using the ibstpi performance statements.
  • The distance learning arm at the University of Québec in Montreal and the developer of sophisticated tools for distance have collaborated with ibstpi to design training for online instructors and instructional designers based on the ibstpi standards.
  • Boise State University employs the ibstpi performance and instruction standards and the ISPI performance and instruction standards in their graduate IPT program.

Why use Standards as a framework for Instructional Design curricular?

After reviewing several degree programs, and their rationales to using primarily the ibstpi standards as a framework for developing their curriculum, the following are reasons why the standards help solidify degree programs and produce competent graduates:

  • Standards provide a curriculum with structure.
  • Standards provide continuity within the curriculum.
  • Standards allow graduates to be measured against a criterion.
  • Standards guide the evaluation of curriculum and the effectiveness of the curriculum can be measured more accurately.
  • Standards guide students enrolled in the degree program and it makes goal setting easier and attainable.
