EDTC 6020 Principles of Instructional Design

This page is one person's (Martindale's) descriptive guide and approach to this course.

This is an important course. It is foundational to the rest of the degree program. The things you learn in this course will serve you well in any instructional situation. In this course you will explore the basic terminology, historical perspectives, theoretical basis, research, and practical application of instructional design. This course enables students to use and apply instructional design principles.

The course is designed to instruct students on the instructional design process and current trends and issues related to instructional design. We will investigate the historical, current, and emerging technologies and processes as related to the application and integration of ID in education and training environments.

Sample Course Objectives:

At the completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Describe the major components of the instructional design process
  2. Conduct a goal analysis
  3. Conduct a subordinate skills analysis
  4. Conduct a learner analysis
  5. Describe how entry behaviors can be identified for a specific population
  6. Define the contexts for learning and performance for a specific instructional task
  7. Formulate performance objectives from instructional goals and their subordinate skills
  8. Develop criterion-referenced test items for specific performance objectives
  9. Suggest motivational strategies and activities for a specific instructional task
  10. Develop a design evaluation chart
  11. Formulate an instructional strategy
  12. Describe a personalized approach to the instructional development process
